I wouldn’t normally post a MGMT track, because they’ve received quite enough hype already, (albeit deservedly) but this remix was too good to resist. Jorge Elbrecht has really outdone himself with this one. The thing I find so charming about MGMT is their ability to combine whimsical innocence and amicable sarcasm, alternating them beautifully through the twelve tracks on their recent release, Oracular Spectacular. And then Elbrecht comes along and infuses Time To Pretend with so much psychedaelia that it becomes an entirely different creature, a swirling electronic kaleidoscope of noise and distortion. You’d expect that this sound, coming from the Violens frontman, Elbrecht, would mirror what you’d find in the New York-based five-piece which was included in this year’s L Magazine’s, “8 NYC Bands You Need to Hear,” however Violens shares far more in common with MGMT itself than it does with Elbrecht’s psychedelic aesthetic. That’s what is so fascinating about this remix, the sound comes out of nowhere, garnering your attention just as much by its unexpectedness and inventiveness as it does by its skilful execution. Violens and Elbrecht definitely deserve a second look.

You really like this remix? I think it’s terrible! It totally changes the track, including the key/melody. I was hoping for something great, but this just sucks.
Of course I do! I wouldn’t post it if I didn’t like it.
Changing the key/melody of a track can be an amazing part of the whole ‘remixing phenomenon’ because it’s a fascinating thing to watch an artist put their own personal stamp on another artist’s work that they enjoy. I love this remix BECAUSE it’s so different from the original. He’s practically changed its genre, which takes a lot of skill, and personally I love the new darker, more complex sound just as much as I like the original. It’s a good thing that people are Jorge are experimenting like this.
