A couple of Fridays back, Ned and I were lucky enough to finagle our way into the season launch of Melbourne-based fashion label Trimapee at a soon to be demolished warehouse down the Spencer St end of La Trobe. Now, this launch had a few things going for it:

a) My first ever fashion show! Exciting! I felt both under-dressed and insufficiently pretty;
b) Free alcohol! Oh yes, that always helps; and
c) A cranking soundtrack by the always impressive Mu-Gen, from fellow Melbourne music hub Scatterblog.

And because Mu-Gen is such an all round great dude, he’s sent over the mix he did for the show, a scorching twenty minute riff on the themes of Arabic, Industrial, Historical and Modern. Which is quite the melange really, but he managed to pull it off. Somehow. It’s a short, sharp power punch of a mix, filled with tribal beats, heavy bass, off-kilter track selection and a whole suite of Indian and Turkish samples. And if you’re wondering why it sounds kinda muddy, that was Mu-Gen trying to match up with the warehouse vibe. So rad. So dirty.

Although, the other track of note from that night was the Crazy P (i.e. the band formerly known as Crazy Penis) remix of Mujava’s icon of 2008 ‘Township Funk’. It’s a little late to the party sure, but it manages to do what most of the other remixes of Township Funk can’t, and that’s to put an interesting and unique spin on that of so recognisable melody line. Witness, then, kwaito’s urban grime reborn as a chilled as fuck space disco roller. Recommended.
