Belgian “punktrance” trio, The Subs, have just released their debut album, Subculture, today, and as inaccessible as the above bastardised genre might seem in any environment that isn’t largely club-related, it’s actually a fantastic listen on its own merit, ie I’m barely awake because it’s late and it’s a Monday night, but I somehow still enjoy it. From the comfortingly familiar Fuck That Shit, Papillon, and Kiss My Trance, to the ridiculously addictive opener, Music Is The New Religion, and the creepy space odyssey that is The Albatross, Jeroen De Pessemier (Papillon), Wiebe Loccufier (Tonic) and Stefan Bracke (l’entrepreneur) have produced a veritable keeper.
And the ultimate pleasant surprise with Subculture is that their included cover of The Prodigy’s Breathe is surprisingly brilliant. As an hopelessly staunch purist when it comes to anything Prodigy, the fact that I not only don’t hate this cover, but actually kind of love it, might be some indication of how successful and awesome it is.
Subculture is out now on Lektroluv Records, so head to their Myspace page to pick it up via iTunes.

Too bad they didn’t add any older tracks, like Arpolis or something like that, but it’s still some good stuff.
