So Swedish Columbia emailed us a few days ago about this, but I foolishly bided my time only to find that Trash Managerie totally beat me to the punch on Saturday. Damn. Well played, Lovestar, well played.
Ordinarily I’d regard a relatively untouched artist like TRiOBeLiSK as already-discovered goods in this situation, but I’ve become too fond of the guy to pass him by now. I do enjoy an artist with a theme. Especially one involving esoteric imagery and some kind of Cult of Triangles. What is a Triobelisk anyway? Is it simply a monolith with only three sides, or something more sinister althogether…?
In second year Near Eastern Archaeology we learnt about the obelisk, so I watched some documentary I found about them at home. Alarm bells began to ring in my head during the introduction which posed the profound and perhaps unanswerable question: “The Obelisk, a mystifying and awe-inspiring stone manifestation of the unexplained phenomenon of voluntary extra-terrestrial contact and communication with the ancient world…? Or a major architectural feature of archaic Egypt, Greece and Rome.” Smooth. Top marks to the producers for going there. There being extra-terrestrials.
And back to the point now, Washington-based DJ/producer, TRiOBeLiSK, dabbles in mysterious-sounding multi-layered synths to produce something “other worldly,” or yes, ok, a kind of “space disco.” His remixes are great too, and you can pick up a heap of them on his Myspace page. More importantly though, you can head to his page to purchase his debut EP, Zoneplex, which was released mid-April. I probably should’ve somehow found my way onto his bandwagon back then. Oh well.
