Serious Music for Silly People

lionandsheeplamb-animal02

A couple of months ago I had a realisation: Hypem.com no long catered for my taste in electronic music. I’d known the day was coming for a while, but I didn’t want to admit it; I’d imagined it to be akin to finding out your girlfriend was cheating on you, or discovering your cat had been run over whilst you were out getting milk.

Like many people my age, my introduction to electronic music had come from an indie-angle, getting into people like DFA 1979 (R.I.P) and LCD Soundsystem before graduating onto Justice and Simian Mobile Disco. Whilst all of the mentioned are exceptional talents, over the past few months I’ve delved more and more away from their ilk, and more towards what I used to (incorrectly) refer to as ‘proper’ dance music. I started to realise that there was more to this stuff than blogs on one side and trance on the other; indeed, the blog scene is a lot more isolated that people realise.

So, as I stepped away from Wordpress and into a place where everyone has names that have lots of constanants in, I thought it’d be nice to use my space here to showcase music from people that do not get the blog-love that other, perhaps less-deserving artists, do.

One of these goes by the name of H.O.S.H. He’s pretty much my paradigm example for the kind of artist that I used to ignore back my Plimsouls 1.0 days; he’s on a label I don’t immediately recognise, he hasn’t done any blog-profile remixes and his myspace page is annoyingly sparse. Once I actually took the time to listen, however, I found some pleasantly pop-sensibilities, and none of this melody-less bleep nonsense that I had foolishly attributed to artists I didn’t immediately recognise.

This track is called The Valve. It’s good, listen.

H.O.S.H. - The Valve

Dude, it honestly sounds like you’re reading out my life story for the past year or two. I have also realised that there is a lot of crap on blogs too and that it is a fairly insular community at times. I still love it but the world of electronic music stretches far and wide, I’m only just starting to touch the sides. Sweet track btw :)

Thanks! I think a lot of people are in the same boat. Glad you like the track too.

Blogs have lots and lots of fantastic music on them, and have helped change the way we interact with music for the better… but there is so, so, so much more out there.

Matt, whay do u mean by “proper” dance music? i also what do you mean the blog community is a lot more isolated than ppl realize?
    - - - what, as in there’s tons more than one is being published on the blogs, and its different stuff than what the blogs will give u? - in that case i’d have to ask, how did u come across H.O.S.H?

    Yahla,

“Proper” dance music was a term I used to use for things like techno, tech-house and minimal. It was just a way of labelling that little subset of the genre… it isn’t any better or more worthy than any other type of dance music… just a silly little name I had really.

“what, as in there’s tons more than one is being published on the blogs, and its different stuff than what the blogs will give u?”

Yea, pretty much! Example - I was talking to a big promoter in Bristol who puts on lots of huge huge names… he couldn’t name a single blog, and was pretty much unaware of what goes on in this corner of the internet. There is a lot of things that go on that the blog scene doesn’t really touch.

I found out about H.O.S.H by listening to a mix by Casper C… you can get a lot of great music by listening to other DJs mixes, reading their charts etc etc etc.

I hope this clears things up!
