That’s a command, not a competition. In one of the more incongruous pieces of festival programming I’ve seen in a while, Dan Deacon was booked to follow Feist in her Perth show last night. While Feist was reasonably mediocre (gorgeous voice notwithstanding), it was Deacon who stole the show, playing what could quite possibly be the best 45 minute music experience of my life. I don’t think I have ever had such a deliriously euphoric and ecstatic legal music experience. He is also fucking hilarious. In the space of these 45 minutes, he had everyone doing stretches, made us do a 30 second countdown in a variety of emotions (’Imagine you’re a kid, about 10 or 12, and your parents have finally decided that you’re mature enough to have a puppy, and you get the puppy and you love it, but then the puppy gets hit by a car, but it’s not dead it’s just seriously hurt, so you cradle it and take it into your parents to take care of it, and your dad gets it and then starts hitting it with a hammer and yelling at you ‘you did this, you did this!’ and then they both rip off their skins to reveal that they’re Matrix-style agents. I want you to channel those emotions for seconds 30 to 15′), got everybody to form a semi-circle so that he could organise a dance contest, had a section of the crowd form a human tunnel with their arms and then had everybody else pass through it and add to the tunnel so that the tunnel ended up stretching around the length of the venue, and handed out the lyrics to Wham City so that everyone could sing along while they danced like maniacs.
It sounds fucking ridiculous, and it is. But the whole thing is so intoxicating that you abandon your pretensions in the breeze and regress 15 years. Oh, and the music? Indie-glitch happy hardcore. It’s an experience.
Dan is playing a few more dates in Australia before he heads elsewhere, so if you live in Adelaide, Brisbane or Sydney, then drop everything from your schedule and take everyone you love to see one of the shows. You’ll be talking about it for weeks.

HIS WHOLE BACK CATALOG prior to his new album. For free. Seriously, Dan Deacon is awesome. I reccomend Acorn Master.
Man, I get a huge smile on my face every time I watch that video. Unfortunately the tune seems to be a live only special though, so I’m going to have to survive with the video’s discordant, distorted glory…
Holy shit balls
i gotta see this guy!
