SebastiAn Remix Album

Oh, hello SebastiAn. I almost completely forgot you were there, what with the crazy excitement over disco and all lately. Fuck. I think I love you…

In a move identical yet opposite to that of HEALTH when they released HEALTH//DISCO earlier this year, SebastiAn is releasing the majority of his major remixes from 2007/2008 in a remix album (aptly named “Remixes”) on September 10th. Of course most of you will be underwhelmed by the concept of SebastiAn remix album as most of you will already have every remix on it, and in my endeavour to adhere some kind of value to this release (ie make it worth purchasing/acquiring), it’s a shame that I can’t even use the idealistic//marketing-friendly sentiment of HEALTH in justifying an album full of remixes which are, particularly in blog terms, ANCIENT:

“The goal of this record is not only to present all these songs at once, but also to ensure that they are not forgotten in the constantly updating, content-hungry internet music world.”

Sure, you could say the same about SebastiAn’s remix album, only it doesn’t quite work when the exercise is to preserve one’s own material, rather than that of a handful of doting remixers…

But then I played the album in full, and realised it doesn’t matter that I have all these remixes already, the album is awesome because it pulls them all together, encouraging you to spend an uninterrupted hour or so with SebastiAn the way he intends it, and not the way your iTunes could facilitate with the collection of shitty-quality remixes you’ve ferreted from various blogs over the past year. And shit, so it’s a glorified mixtape and purely one for the music nerds, but I think it’s fantastic. Head to Ed Banger in September to get a copy.

Kelis – Bossy (SebastiAn Remix)

Klaxons – Golden Skans (SebastiAn Remix)

While I’m not such a fan of posting old tracks just for the hell of it, when they’re at 320 it’s possibly arguably a valid enough excuse.

I am very happy that SebastiAn is releasing remixes, I can’t wait! Also, there is a cool new digital audio format that enables an artist to create variations of a song by integrating “skins”, or interpretations into a track. Check it out at http://www.mxp4.com. It would be great if SebastiAn tried it!

Thanks for the information. This has been circulating in the rumor mill for a long, long time. A cynic might wonder, though, if the compilation will highlight the fact that SebastiAn’s remixes have gotten increasingly less adventurous and more samey over the past few years as well. His own tracks are still interesting, but there are barely a dozen of these altogether. I wish I could remain excited about SebastiAn, but he’s making it really difficult – and I say that as someone who still considers “Walkman (Re-Edit)” and “Ross Ross Ross” two of the most exciting dance tunes of the last decade. Sigh.

does anyone have the stats on how many remixes sebastian churned out in 06-07?

if so, can the stats be broken down to get the hit/miss ratio? as much as i like sebastian i think that ratio would probably be like 1:10
