Scion A/V + Discobelle + Everyone = Heap Good
Scion A/V really get it, you know? At a time when many of the labels that have emerged from blogs are becoming ever more protective of their music and artists, and music blogs themselves seem at risk of becoming second rate PR adjuncts (just as a side point, labels: I will NEVER post a sampler or a mini-mix for you, so stop asking), Scion A/V are a grand example of what can happen when you trust the power of the free music economy to work for you. And Scion is primarily a Japanese car manufacturer. Weird.
The latest Scion A/V offering has been created together with the mighty Discobelle, as Scion’s first excursion into blog-directed record releases. Discobelle were given free reign to source tracks from 12 artists of their choosing and thus we have the Scion CD Sampler Vol. 24, a Swede-heavy assortment of tech-revival, stomping electro, new new wave, eurodance, minor house, b-more and ghettotech taken from artists such as Top Billin’, Emynd, Don Rimini, Oh Snap!!, Dada Life and more. Discobelle will be posting all the tracks over the next couple of weeks, but here’s a couple of my faves in glorious 320.
First up is a new cut from one of my resident loves of the last year, Don Rimini. If you’re a fan of his other tracks, then ‘Karate’ will come as no surprise. Pounding kick drums, acid-inflected bass synths and clipped vocal samples ahoy. Right now, I’m listening to it while eating lunch. It doesn’t make any sense.
Don Rimini – Karate
My second pick is ‘Playboy Anthem’ by Top Billin’, which Discobelle themselves picked to lead off their coverage of the release. Nothing too revolutionary here, but it’s still a shining example of what I might, in a less charitable state of mind refer to as ‘bro-house’. Simple but bouncing 8-bit style synths with a straight-up electro-house drumline and pseudo-rap vocals. Shit ain’t revolutionary, but it is fun. And it is catchy. And it’ll make the bros dance. And bros need to dance y’all.
