Now then, my raggedy subjects, I think we can all agree that this here is one ridiculously spiffing tower. I could quite easily fit a billion of my very expensive horses inside it, plus a good number of those little goaty things that are always lying about my stables, eating sandals and what have you. Bless their little hearts. Put your hand down, Darius, I’ve already told you I’m not replacing them. Now I wouldn’t normally do this, but my wife has written a song about the tower, and seeing as she was kidnapped by those wretched Sea People and will probably be forced to live on a tiny fishing boat and, you know, “polish the woodwork,” I think it would be nice if we all sung… look boy, I have warned you before, not so close. You see this? This is my personal space. And all the way over here, this is your personal space. If these two collide, well that’s when death plagues and salt pillars start to happen. How do I know that? More lifting and less questions! And stop scrunching the exquisite fabric up like that. I want them to see my royal cape from space! Ok, best voices now, sopranos first, one, two… Amittai! Will you tell your kid to keep it down over there? Everyone knows Biscuit bites because his humours are askew. Ok, one, two… whoa, headspin, slight earth tremor, did anyone else just feel that? Issachar! Stop rambling and wandering off! You’re our only tenor! Are you listening to me? Darius? Boy…? Hey… goaty things! Where did you come from? Good lord, you can talk? No, no, the pleasure is all mine! My throne room? Right this way!

With an accompanying clip featuring The Tough Alliance’s Eric Berglund and Henning Fürst praying and doing magical things with lasers inside Joos de Momper and Frans Francken the Younger’s the Tower of Babel (inexplicably), “Neo Violence”, the Swedish pop-perfect single from TTA’s third album, A New Chance (out on Modular now), has become even more awesome with a Shazam remix. The Perth-based Shazam, whose remixing efforts are a perpetual success as he renders any track he touches infinitely more lovely and dance-friendly, has somehow managed to fit even more gorgeousness into this track, which on its own is already brimming with it. The kid has such an ear for a melody. Keep an eye out for his upcoming Empire of the Sun remix, and Pool Party 12”, because they are going to be huge.

No guys sorry to disappoint but this is not the latest straight to video release of ‘The Land Before Time’ series, although who wouldn’t want to hear about the latest adventures of little foot and the gang. I guess he would be Big Foot by now and have a family of his own. I just looked it up and found out there are actually 13 sequels already! That’s a lot of Dino adventures! This isn’t one of them.

The Last Dinosaurs are a Brisbane band who have just popped up on the radar, think The Strokes served on a hot bed of Dardanelles (what happened to those guys?) seasoned with a pinch of The Police. They have a few tracks up on theirspace but this is my favorite, ‘Thousand Years’ has just enough vocals and is just a real body convulsing song. Very impressed with the production on this track too, sounds very professional for a Brisbane indie band. All in all a good romper!

Remember Yo Majesty’s Club Action? Remember how for a while there in early 2007 you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing the Bag Raiders’ Enya-laden edit of the track played at least twice per evening? Remember how nary a week went by without another remix of the track dropping all over the blogs? Yeah? You remember that? Good, because the track has been released by Domino today. Say what?

In what has to be one of the most curiously delayed releases of all time, Club Action is getting its first official release today, a good solid 18 months after the track really racked up momentum in early 2007. Of course, it’s probably been timed to coincide with the release of their first album, the horrendously titled ‘Futuristically Speaking… Never Be Afraid’. But still. I can remember being amazed when I realised that Van She Tech’s remix of the Utah Saints’ ‘Something Good’ was arriving a year after it first made contact with the blog world, but this is just something else again. I think I always just assumed that with the sort of prominence it picked up that it must have been officially released way back when.

Ah well, so here we are. A full release, with a suite of new(ish) remixes from the Stanton Warriors, Sunship, Matt Helder and Bless Beats. It’s a pretty solid track and, let’s be honest, the vocals are fucking awesome, so it’s good to see the original taken in a few new directions. My picks of the bunch are the Sunship and Stanton Warriors’ efforts, two variations which really could not be more diametrically opposed. The Sunship remix is a groovy, four-to-the-floor electro-disco track filled with appropriately sunny synths and bouncing CSS-style basslines, while the Stanton Warriors turn in a dark, booty-shaking breaks number, floating the vocals on heavy beats and dubstep-worthy bass pulses. Which is a pretty good summation of my increasingly schizophrenic musical proclivities these days. Light and dark, together at last.

As mentioned, the single is out now and can be picked up on vinyl through Domino or digitally in any number of dirty/clean//instrumental permutations through Beatport.
Truth be told, I’ve been looking for an excuse to do a post on breaks (and more) supremo DJ Deekline for quite some time. Although I feel a little weird talking about Deekline in the singular, because as long as I’ve been aware of his existence, he’s always been tied in with somebody else. First there was the Deekline & Wizard combo, and of late it seems to have largely transitioned to the Deekline & Ed Solo pairing. Although Wizard is still hanging around the bleachers. Why Deekline is so persistently attached is anyone’s guess though. Perhaps he’s the beauty to his collaborator’s brains. Perhaps he just gets lonely. Perhaps he doesn’t exist at all and he’s just a psudonym other producers use when they want to add clout to a release. Hmmm, makes you think, doesn’t it?…

Anyway. An excuse has finally been given in the shape of not one, but two stonking new takes on Tittsworth’s Kid Sister and Pase Rock featuring track ‘WTF’, delivered courtesy of the Deekline & Ed Solo outfit. For your listening delight they’ve turned in both a straight up breaks and a 4X4 remix, allowing DJs from both ends of the spectrum to get in on the action. Which is a good thing because these tracks are wicked, throwing in a cruising, bounce funk bassline and some more straightforward drums to give the original plenty of dancefloor heft. Deekline seems to have set himself apart from a lot of the other traditionally ‘breaks’ producers by getting in on the digital and blog bandwagon and this is no different - the tracks are promo only and not available to buy elsewhere. Awesome. Of course, this should only make you want to buy the original single and its Nadastrom, DJ Wool, Eli Escobar and Smoke and Mirrors remixes all the more. Grab it from iTunes (US and Canada or everywhere else), Beatport and Juno.

Tittsworth feat. Kid Sister and Pase Rock - WTF (Deekline & Ed Solo Breaks Remix)

But this is far too good an opportunity to pass up, so let’s have a brief tour through Mr Deekline’s back catalogue shall we? Possibly for my benefit as much as yours, but God I like him. First up is this charmingly funky, if functional bootleg of Clipse’s ‘Wamp Wamp’, taken from the Deekline & Ed Solo ‘DJ Food for the Masses’ single, an off-kilter release that also includes an intensely bass heavy rendering of the iconic ‘Young Folks’. Worth checking out.

Deekline & Ed Solo - Wamp Wamp

Next up we have a very, very Deekline outing in the Deekline & Wizard remix of the Deekline & Ed Solo track ‘Touch Your Toes’. I know. I’m confused too. Either way, this is a pretty fabulous summation of the Deekline ethic: booty-shaking basslines, slightly dirty hip-hop vocals and bouncing beats. This is why breaks was awesome 3 years ago.

Deekline & Ed Solo feat. Darrison - Touch Your Toes (Deekline and Wizard Remix)

God there’s a lot to choose from. Um. Here’s a more recent outing in ‘Steam’, a Deekline & Wizard track featuring production from Fresh, and vocals from Spyda and MC Ivory. This is, in a word, massive. This is like the spiritual successor to ‘Fasten Your Seatbelts’. And while everyone likes to dump on Pendulum these days, that track was off the fucking charts. As is this. Wooo.

Deekline and Wizard vs Fresh feat. Spyda and MC Ivory - Steam

And finally we have one of the biggest Deekline & Wizard tracks ever released, their remix of The Freestyler’s ‘Boom Blast’. This is what breaks circa 2004-5 was all about. Heavy ass beats, massive build-ups and thumping bass. Every time I heard this track I went a little bit special. Like I was screaming and jumping all over the place. I miss those days. Quite possibly everyone who used to dance in my vicinity is glad they’re gone…

The Freestylers - Boom Blast (Deekline & Wizard feat. Yolanda Remix)

And that really is only a sampling. Go explore Beatport or something and have a look at everything the man has to offer. This is party music at its very best. Whoever he’s playing with.

Ok snow hare, now I don’t want to alarm you, but I’m pretty sure arctic fox over there can actually already see you, judging from that malicious toothy grin he’s giving you. And I’m not going to say it wasn’t entirely your fault that you got caught, seeing as you did decide to hide precisely within his line of sight, standing up to increase your overall surface area, no less. But it’s ok, your paws are inexplicably much bigger than arctic fox’s delicate mittens, and you do have rather impressive-looking haunches, so just hop over, kick that smarmy look off his face, and run! So you might stomp on a couple of petrels in the process with those giant fuck-off man-paws of yours, sure, but this is the wild! It’s not Animals of Farthing Wood for christ’s sake! (Although if you guys did want to team up against all odds and common sense to journey towards a utopian deer park together, where you could live and breed (not with each other obviously, gross) in peace, don’t let me stop you. Just don’t tell the petrels I told you that one of them is probably not going to make it on account of it accidentally impaling itself on a spiky fence post at some point.) Ohh, hey petrel… so you can hear me then. Err… carry on…

Again I find myself posting a remix of a track which on its own pretty much only irritates me. But if it’s played out in remix form I’ll invariably end up dancing to it, and, despite myself, probably know all the words, which is why I can’t for the life of me avoid it. And surprisingly, this remix by Sheffield’s Run Hide Survive, stands up amazingly well against the previous efforts of remixing royalty, Cut Copy and Yuksek, whom you’d think combined would have left nary a stone unturned in terms of creative directions for this track, but Run Hide Survive’s Mike and Luke were obviously unphased because they have produced something truly awesome.

Never Miss A Beat was released early last month through Polydor Records, so go here to pick up a copy, and say hi to Mike and Luke at their Myspace page here.

After selling out Summadayze festivals around the country Kitsune’s Digitalism have just announced a Melbourne sideshow including one very special date on January 10 at the Forum in Melbourne.

It’s been a pretty massive couple of years for the Digitalism boys, Jence and Isi with relentless touring touring, featuring on Kitsune Maison 6, remix duties and the Kitsune Tabloid mixtape. Hell we even hosted their manager out here at the start of the year.

I’m looking forward to early January with Lykke Li, Santogold, Franz Ferdinand and Digitalism all playing their own headline sideshows.
