Boy, Rolling Stone are in trouble. In their November issue this year they’ve included this Indie Rock Universe article that lists some great bands alongside some pretty illustrations. Very subtly, however, they’re included the sponsor: Camel Cigarettes.

Here is what Anti-Cigarette activists are calling “one big cigarette ad”:

Now Xiu Xiu, Fucked Up, and I’m sure a bunch of bands yet to pipe up, are issuing lawsuits claiming their names were used without consent to sell cancer sticks.

“The ‘Indie Rock Universe’ feature … is not an advertisement,” Mark Neschis, a spokesman for Rolling Stone, said in an e-mail. “It was conceived and created exclusively by the editorial department, without any review by or consultation with any advertiser.”

The outrageous part? If they come out in front, Rolling Stone are apparently looking at losing around $195 billion, according to The Daily Swarm.

That’s why I’m sure, if they succeed, every band mentioned in that article [150+] will make their peace. Rolling Stone are fucked.
