Moulinex and Xinobi are in the country at the moment on the D.I.S.C.O. Texas tour, taking in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

I was lucky enough to catch up with Luis Moulinex and Bruno Xinobi yesterday to talk about the tour, the label and music in general. They told me a little bit more about the upcoming Xinobi 12″, their rock n roll lifestyles and where they’re going to next. And I also learned who Arthur Baker is and why it’s exciting they are working together.

Catch the interview after the jump!

Electrorash: Hey guys, thanks for coming in. What have you been up to?

Xinobi: Sleeping, getting used to the time zones.

Electrorash: Cool. So you are on the DISCO Texas tour now. What is DIscotexas.

Xinobi: It’s a record label. It’s DJ’s and producers and artists and designers and porno producers. It’s all Portuguese guys at the moment.

Electrorash: I understand you’ve [Xinobi] have a 12″ coming out soon as well

Xinobi: Yeah, it’s coming out really soon. It’s at the factory at the moment getting made but there have been a couple of delays.

Electrorash: And you guys are associated with the France disco collective Valerie as well. I see you are both listed as having tracks on their upcoming VA compilation. Is DISCO Texas kind of like the Portuguese version of Valerie?

  • Moulinex: Sure, there are a lot of similarities. That’s a good way to put it I guess, that’s what we are trying to do.Electrorash: For Australia I think our similar group is probably Modular or Cut Copy’s label “Cutters” or something like that. How did the Light’s and Music remix come about?

Moulinex: I was approached by the bands manager and it was really exciting. I was really excited to do it. It wasn’t a hard track because I went back and we did it a lot of times. With remixes you can experiment a lot more. First of all you have other peoples materials and labels usually approve of them.

Electrorash: And you have some more remixes coming out soon?

Moulinex: Sure. I am doing one for Sebastien Tellier for Kilometre. And one for Ben Mono for “Jesus Was A BBoy”. I am doing one for synth duo [and electrorash.com favourites] Kap10Kurt and what else… There are more…

    Electrorash: Future cop and Grum?

Moulinex: Yeah, of course! But I haven’t started on Grum yet.

Electrorash: Sounds exciting. It seems like you’ve got the whole Discodust roster.

Xinobi: Yeah! That’s the guy. He’s like the genius behind the -

    Moulinex: – like the gatherer!

    Xinobi:
Yeah, he finds everything before anyone else. He’s like a label in his own right

Moulinex: I played a Discodust party in Frankfurt and it was really great. They were all really inspired and doing interesting things. I think he has some great people around him.

Electrorash: And you are doing some stuff with Arthur Baker as well which you seem very excited about. Who is Arthur Baker?

Moulinex: He’s the guy who recorded and produced Afrika Bambataa’s “Planet Rock”, New Order.

    Xinobi:
He basically invented sampling. He would say he wanted a track to sound a certain way and he would take session musicians and record them playing covers and then put it on the tracks.

Moulinex: He recorded New Order… Walking On Sunshine. But the good one, the Rockers Revenge version. And he contacted me and says he has this disco recording from the 1970′s and asked if I wanted to work on it.

    Electrorash: Wow. I have goosebumps

Moulinex: I knew the name [Arthur Baker]. I knew he was the guy who did Afrika Bambaataa’s “
Planet Rock” but that was about it. But then when I looked into more I realised who we would be working with.

Electrorash: So he’s kind of like Giorgio Moroders younger brother?

Moulinex: He’s like Giorgio if Giorgio didn’t want to be a rock star.

Electrorash: Is there any plans for you guys to produce other bands? Is there anything in the works?

Xinobi: I would like to help produce some of our friends stuff who are only DJing right now. They have some good ideas but they don’t know how to do it just yet.

Moulinex: I would really like to do some non-dance like bands or experimental stuff.

Xinobi: I actually recorded some punk bands. The Vicious Five. They are quite big in Portugal.

Electrorash: Is there any plans for a live set for you guys? To do any live work?

Moulinex: thats my idea actually, to set up a live band. But it’s hard. When you live in Munich but your friends live in Portugal it makes it hard to get together. The DISCO Texas tour is a good chance for us to work together. Normally I go to a gig in Portugal and get in at 9pm and then leave early in the morning to go home to my family

Electrorash: So I guess an Australian tour is a productive thing then. You have to fly all this way but that’s a long time on the plane together to work on new music on your laptop.

Xinobi: It’s like 40 hours of flight! It’s a lot of time.

Electrorash: Is touring for you guys like “Sex, Drugs and Rock N Roll”?

    Moulinex:
It’s more like “Pyjamas, Milk N Cookies”

Electrorash: So where to from here for you guys?

Xinobi: I think we want to make more music and get more visible.

Moulinex: We will have the first release coming out which will be Xinobi’s 12″ and then I will put out a release. Initially it will be a mix of vinyl and digital downloads so we can get more material out sooner and we will see how it goes.

Electrorash: Ok great, thanks guys. All the best!
