You know there must be something wrong with The System when artists have to start stipulating which sub-genres they don’t want to be associated with in a blog post. Right now the dirtiest (and potentially dead) subgenre in the electro/indie scene is of course New Rave, so it makes sense that sexy German electro three-piece, Malk, specifically requested not to be classified as such. I told them not to worry, I would never be so lazy as to call anything New Rave anyway. Will this make things difficult for me right now when I’m feeling too tired and unimaginative to adequately describe them? Very likely. That said, they do seem to fit rather nicely into the maximal-techno-rap-trash niche that I’m sure has to exist. (Man I hate sub-genres.) Welcome to some awesome, dynamic, and highly addictive stuff laced with that deliciously trashy German attitude. It will get stuck in your head, but you probably won’t even mind at all.
Now I’m not exactly sure what they mean when they say, “the listener is surrounded by scraps of words encased in zeros and ones, which make the bounds of sexual illustration disappear,” only to assume that my initial interpretation of some kind of massive binary orgy is wildly off track. But if I said that they are supporting the absolutely wonderful Yelle and the colourful Trash Fashion lads in March, you’d be convinced of their supreme awesomeness wouldn’t you? I hope so. And how could you not love them for their cheeky Calvin “I invented disco” Harris-esque declaration that they invented maximal?
