Another Kitsune compilation, another obligatory highlight-filled blog post. I know I ain’t exactly fresh on the train here (despite the fact that the album doesn’t even drop until February 4…), but these little fellas have turned into such barometers of the ‘electro’ sound that they do seem to deserve at least some appraisal.
So, what have I discovered? I gotta admit, the whole package hasn’t entirely sold me. At the very least, there doesn’t appear to be anything as earth-shatteringly huge as say ‘Zdarlight’ or ‘Crossover Appeal’ or the Van She Tech remix of ‘Gravity’s Rainbow’ to be found. With that said though, the overall standard of the tunes and artists being pumped out by the Kitsune kids still trumps most other labels you’d care to name. There’s a few reworkings of already sizable tunes to be found, including some handy DJ-friendly extensions of Does It Offend You, Yeah?’s ‘Let’s Make Out’, and DatA’s phenomenal ‘Aerius Light’. The Gentlemen Drivers turn in a rolling, melodic remix of The Teenager’s ever-present ‘Homecoming’ and Digitalism have another go at ‘Pogo’ (although as far as I’m concerned this song now belongs squarely to Shinichi Osawa). As for new material, there’s really not too much to excite, with some passable pop courtesy of Fischerspooner, a disappointing, albeit different Alan Braxe offering and a selection of generally uninspiring electro and/or rock tunes from artists like Friendly Fires, Pin Me Down and autoKratz.
But all is not mediocrity! As far as highlights go (is that incredibly bad form, leaving the positives ’til last? I like to think it sends you away on a high…) David E. Sugar shows he’s come of age with ‘To Yourself’ (which can be found here), Tepr turns in a cranking remix of Yelle’s wonderful ‘ACDG’ and the mysterious Rex The Dog continues to mesh electro and techno with superb results in ‘Circulate’. All in all it’s a mixed bag though, and definitely a step down from their previous powerhouse efforts, but hey, it’s fucking Kitsune. Of course you want to own it.
