Electrorash VS Pivot

pivot1.jpg

So ok, tonight everyone who doesn’t live in Melbourne (including myself) will be missing out on the amazing event that will be our first ever official Electrorash party. [Insert a thousand sad sighs here.] Fortunately, just because you live in another city, say… oh… Sydney, doesn’t mean your night has to suck. Our very own math rock darlings, Pivot, are playing a show at my favouritest of all places, The Oxford Art Factory, before they play a show in Melbourne, before they flit off overseas for an international tour. It’s a shame Pivot haven’t experienced much notoriety in the past, even in their own country, because God knows they deserve it. But you can be sure their recent signing to the delightfully off-centre Warp Records will change all of that. And being the first ever Australian artists to do so pretty much means they are to Warp what Miranda Kerr is to Victoria’s Secret. Except Kerr’s got prettier hair.

I’ve been madly in love with Pivot ever since I saw their show in Melbourne as support for Battles’ Australian tour. They really are a prime example of what is characteristically beautiful about math rock as a genre. Strong, mechanical beats presented in an almost mess-like structure except that each sound is so perfectly-controlled and perfectly-articulated that it really is like the musical equivalent of that pages-long maths problem the 4-unit (ie super-super-advanced) kids always used to do in highschool. Jeez I sucked at maths.

Pick up your tickets for tonight at Moshtix. Melbourne kids, contact the East Brunswick Club, because that’s where they’ll be playing next week on the 28th. Nek will be there. But if you can’t catch them at either of those shows, because, I don’t know, you’re in another state, keep an eye out for their new single, In The Blood, to be released some time in May before their debut full length.
