I am all over Don Rimini like some horrible, horrible rash. I guess you could almost call it an… Electrorash… Yeah? High fives!
Right.
In case you haven’t heard, Parisian Don Rimini is the next big thing in awesome. Sitting somewhere in between the twitching grooves of the Crookers and the four-to-the-floor rave madness of Hostage, Rimini has been pumping out some absolutely cranking rave-inflected tech-fidget numbers of late. To my mind, this is almost exactly what I’ve been searching for in the ‘fidget’-sound: less queasy bass squelch, more chopped up rhythms and big build-ups. I often find a lot of fidget seems too mired in those K-driven journeys up and down the octave to have any lasting momentum, but Rimini seems to have shifted the emphasis back towards the ‘house’ part of the equation, so his tunes tear out a lot more than many of his fidgety stablemates. In the midst of this deluge of Crookers clones, it makes for a welcome change, I assure you.
Rimini recently dropped the spectacular Kick’n'Run EP on Mental Groove and the brand new Delicious Gutter (in the US). It’s been getting some serious attention in the mainstream press (it even got a piece in The Guardian for fuck’s sake), and is well worth the purchase. Unlike so many EPs, which often seem to just be a leading single saddled up with a suite of sub-par/conceptual B-sides, the Kick’n'Run EP is wall to wall quality – pretty much every tune on here would get a rapturous reception when played out. But my pick of the bunch is the sublime ‘Rave On’, a terrifically chaotic mess of MC-samples, heavy drops and arpeggiated synths. If you can get through this tune without at least nodding along to the beat then our friendship could be in serious danger.
The full Kick’n'Run EP can be picked up from Beatport (US go here, rest of the world go here) and the iTunes Store.
Also included for your enjoyment is this cheeky little remix of Young MC’s ‘Bust A Move’. This tune is perfect bootleg fodder, holding on to most of the original vocal, and even some of the chord progressions, but making the rest of it oh so very Rimini. It’s out on Delicious Vinyl 12″ (back-to-back with the Diplo remix), or else can be picked up from the iTunes Store.

Yes sir, Don Rimini is about to explode. I can feel it in my waters…
