David E. Sugar

As a general rule, the jarring bleeps of the 8-bit music world remind me a little too forcefully of the long, under-stimulating hours spent on childhood camping trips with naught but a Gameboy for company. However, there is a certain breed of artist that can successfully restrain these mighty beasts of chiptune, and thus not produce the grating anti-melody that we’ve spent the last decade and a half of computer development trying to disavow. David E. Sugar is one of those artists. While Mr. Sugar has been kicking around the scene since 2004, it’s only over the last year or so that he has begun to separate himself from the broader excesses of the 8-bit world and start producing the finely textured pop that his early productions suggested he might be capable of. He’s picked up a band, slowed things down and filled his music out with flecks of chorus-happy new new wave charm. He also put the E. in the middle of his name. I think it stands for ‘excitement’. Actually, I hope it stands for ‘excitement’. Included here are two of his more recent offerings, ‘Chelsea Girls’ (the EP of which is available in both 12″ and download form) and ‘To Yourself’ (off the Kitsune Maison 5 compilation), as well as his uniquely synth-crazy revamp of the Klaxons’ ubiquitous ‘Golden Skans’ and a gleefully camp remix of the Rumble Strips ‘Girls and Boys In Love’. It’s all just so much fun. I definitely think he should come to Australia. Even if just for tea with me. Plenty of other tunes and details available on the myspace. Check it out.
