The other day I was considering what it is about noise rock that makes me love it so absolutely whilst leaving my (cretin) friends so completely and utterly bemused by it. “But it’s just noise!” they keep telling me. Duh. But when done well, it’s perfectly-crafted noise that can skip seamlessly between sharp, mathematical sparseness to a messy primal haze in just a moment. You pretty much either get noise rock or you don’t. If you don’t, you should go hang out with my (cretin) friends. I’m sure they’ll be doing some kind of (cretin) activity you could join in on. But if you do, you should definitely check out LA-based experimental noir-punks, Clipd Beaks, and their recently-released debut full-length album, Hoarse Lords (on Lovepump United). It’s like 40 perfect minutes of messy psychodaelia, or “like punching yourself in the ribcage but in a way where it feels good and everything is really clear after you do it,” according to Fader Magazine. (Check out their interview here.) Either way, when I listen to Hoarse Lords, it feels like home. The cover art is pretty rad too.
