Oh, those Scandanavians are just irrepressible aren't they? It seems that when the French surrendered their semi-serious claim to whimsy, this loosely understood band of snowbound socialist wonderlands emerged from nowhere to carry the torch into the new millennium. So, this is the oddest collaboration I've seen for a while. Neon Neon is the joint brainchild of abstract hip-hop producer Boom Bip and former Super Furry Animals front-man Gruff Rhys. As far as I can tell, not since German synth-poppers The Notwist combined with Canadian anarchist art-rappers Themselves to produce the superlative '13 & God' has there been such a seemingly incongruous meshing of musical styles. Which was probably obvious enough after the previous post. But the new M83 (a.k.a Anthony Gonzalez) album 'Saturdays = Youth' has just been released, and it's fucking gorgeous. By far Gonzalez's most accessible LP to date, 'Saturdays' feels like the logical end point to this stream of 80s revivalism. Producers Ewan 'The Rapture' Pearson and Ken 'Sigur Ros' Thomas have taken the wintry analogue synthscapes of Gonzalez's previous two albums and infused them with a warmth and sentiment more befitting Tears for Fears than My Bloody Valentine. Well it's not long now till the official release of the long-long-LONG-awaited Crystal Castles debut full-length on March 18th. I suppose I don't have to convince any of you that's it's going to be absolutely HUGE, and I have every hope in the world that 2008 will be the year of Ethan and Alice. And judging from the phenomenal job that endearingly mysterious duo have done with the album, ranging perfectly from the typically angsty and raw to the disarmingly pretty and soft, I don't think I'll even need to cross my fingers to help that wish come true. ...

Sometimes when I listen to too much electronic music I start to get concerned that a part of my soul might be dying.
