Breakfest Retrospective

It ended up being 44 degrees at Breakfest yesterday. By the end of it I was such an overstimulated ball of sweat, dirt and yell I could barely speak. And today my over-danced legs are so sore I can barely climb stairs. However, I am under strict instructions from Nek that if I ever dare to suggest that the day may have been better than Daft Punk he will “break [my] fucking nose”, so I’ll withhold judgment. However, I will take this opportunity to post a few of the electro-edged tracks that went down an absolute treat during the completely off-the-charts Stanton Warriors and Plump DJs sets, so strap yourselves in for a grab bag of vicarious joy.

First up we have the very best in fidget house, courtesy of Solid Groove, one of the ever prolific Switch’s many pseudonyms. In other news, Switch is also the freshly crowned XLR8R mag’s Artist of the Year. Go you good thing. I think the mantra of this track is “A lot with a little”. Kinda cryptic, but on a big sound system it does what it does exceptionally well.

I think well-placed hip-hop vocals can be absolutely devastating in housey stompers, and in that respect Sydney boy Hook ‘n’ Sling’s remix of the Stanton’s own tune Shake it Up is absolutely devastating.

And finally we have what has to be one of the best pieces of dance music to be released in the last 12 months or so, the Chemical Brothers’ Electronic Battle Weapon 8 (later re-edited and kinda neutralised as the tune Saturate off We Are The Night). This tune does strange things to me. I lose my fucking mind. As I did when the Stantons dropped it as their last track. I yell a lot. I presume other people enjoy this yelling as much as I do, but sometimes I wonder.

It really was quite the day out. If only it had a pyramid.
