With half of Melbourne still getting over the gurn fest that was Parklife, and the rest of the country still to experience that particular brand of ecstasy, the first Big Day Out lineup has just been announced. And it’s a really mixed bag.
Neil Young
The Prodigy
Arctic Monkeys
My Morning Jacket
Pendulum
Bullet For My Valentine
TV On The Radio (squee!)
Simian Mobile Disco (Fuck yes! Finally!)
The Ting Tings (Duncan’s verdict: ???)
Salmonella Dub
Cut Copy (is this their 4th BDO in a row?)
COG
Youth Group
The Grates
Birds of Tokyo
TZU
Sneaky Soundsystem
Eddy Current Suppression Ring
I am most excited about SMD after overseas friends have told me about how amazing their live show is. Most keenly anticipated and a good reason for me to lift my personal band on festivals.

I know it’s only the first announcement but you’d think they’d be able to pull something a bit more exciting than that.
The Auckland line-up seems less… impressive - no Cut Copy and a bunch of kiwi acts I’d never bother to see back home anyway
If the line-up improves with successive announcements then I shall definitely make the trip across to the Melbourne BDO
One thing though… is BDO in Australia as heavily-populated with acne-ridden tweens of the no-musical-taste variety as is often visited upon our own one? they’re such a turn-off, but then so are so many straight people
I hate to be a traitor to my own city and all, but from experience, the Melbourne crowd is quite pleasant compared to the typical BDO Sydney crowd.
lest we forget the post-cronulla australian flag fiesta of a few years back…
but yeah, line-up not particularly exciting. i’ve managed to avoid seeing pendulum live before, but after in silica i’m not particularly sure how much i now want to. the prodigy are batshit mental live, but i’m going to need more dragging me in then that. tv on the radio would be good to see, but i think at this point i’m just hoping like crazy that SMD do a sideshow somewhere… not particularly hopeful though…
Just a word of warning with SMD….Sometimes they only do a dj set which is no where near as good as their live band set….
