Ok ok, so I know EVERYONE’S already posted about this EP ages ago, but I’ve been holding out to see the cover artwork and haven’t for the life of me been able to find it. So here it finally is. It’s nice and so typically Animal Collective, as is the rest of this EP, due to be released on the 5th of May in the UK and the 6th in the US. No idea what that means for Australia. A happy combination of the two perhaps? …The 56th…?
I definitely like the direction Animal Collective appear to be going with Strawberry Jam and Water Curses. It seems to kind of mimic the progression of the similarly innovative and critically-acclaimed Liars, opting for a slightly more pop-friendly and accessible sound this time around, as opposed to say, Hollinndagain, which was brilliant, but admittedly a little more difficult. What we have in Water Curses is a nicely-paced quartet, opening with the buoyant title track that seems to get increasingly catchy with every inch of added complexity, only to settle down with the remaining three tracks that play like squirrelly lullabyes punctuated with that wild and unpredictable Animal Collective sample work. Very solid stuff. Head to Domino Records in May to pick up copy.
